I wish I could say "been there, done that, here's how I fixed it", but this is new to me!
I never use the SL update mechanism because it never works for me, either crashing or causing worrisome behavior and weird Python thingies bouncing in the dock. You might try downloading the viewer manually, then doing a clean install. It's possible that some setting is borked and that's causing your problem (I've got no better idea!)
To do that, you'll need to get at your main Library Folder, which you can reach via the "Go" menu while holding down the Option key. You'll see "Library" there, select it.
Then navigate to Library->Application Support and find the "SecondLife folder". That folder contains all your chat histories as well as your preference settings. If you don't want to lose those, move the folder to your desktop, you can rummage through it later. If you don't need any of that stuff, trash the folder.
Next, go over to Library->Caches and delete the "SecondLife" folder there.
Finally go to Library->Saved Application State and delete the "com.secondlife..." folder there.
Then mount the viewer download image and copy the viewer to your applications folder and launch it.
Hopefully that will fix your problem. If not, come back here and edit your question via the Options link on the right. Don't start another thread, as that'll break up our conversation and push other people's questions off the front page.
Note: If you are using a third party viewer, look for folders with that viewer's name, not "SecondLife".
Note2: If you don't want the hassle of restoring your chat logs and/or settings and can wait a day, see if anyone else has a better idea than me. It wouldn't be the first time.
Good luck!
Note3: And there you have it. In far less than a day, someone with the real answer comes along and saves the day for both of us. Val, that bug would probably have bitten me. Firestorm has been stalling a lot on me lately and I was gonna switch back to SLV.
