People have been asking for several years now. The answer is "never". It's not going to happen. At this point, Linden Lab has invested a lot of energy in creating a system of usernames that is compatible with social networks like Facebook and a system of Display names to let residents form customized nicknames. It's too late to turn back. They considered it seriously about a year and a half ago and gave up.
It's hard to find anyone in SL who thinks that the one-name system was a bright idea, but we're stuck with it. (Well, people born after 2010 are ..... :smileytongue: )
ETA: Actually, if you really are willing to pay through the nose for a custom name, you can use the Custom Name Program. To qualify, your name must be clearly the name of a corporation or organization (So, "Smith" doesn't work, but "SmithConstruction" does). You also have to pay a $500 setup fee and an annual fee of $500 to keep the name active. So, if you want to be AkinyiMarie GeneralMotors, there's a way.......
