People have been asking for several years now.  The answer is "never".  It's not going to happen.  At this point, Linden Lab has invested a lot of energy in creating a system of usernames that is compatible with social networks like Facebook and a system of Display names to let residents form customized nicknames.  It's too late to turn back.  They considered it seriously about a year and a half ago and gave up.

It's hard to find anyone in SL who thinks that the one-name system was a bright idea, but we're stuck with it.  (Well, people born after 2010 are .....  :smileytongue: )

ETA:  Actually, if you really are willing to pay through the nose for a custom name, you can use the Custom Name Program.  To qualify, your name must be clearly the name of a corporation or organization (So, "Smith" doesn't work, but "SmithConstruction" does).  You also have to pay a $500 setup fee and an annual fee of $500 to keep the name active.  So, if you want to be AkinyiMarie GeneralMotors, there's a way.......
