For the most part there is no limit.

Some free items given as group gifts or gifts in stores where they sell things may limit you to one though.  Also some gifts are only available to avatars that are no more than 30 or 60 days old.

If you are referring to the marketplace, then you a limited to ten transactions until they have been processed, whether free or paid. Else no.

You can put as much as you want into your inventory as every one said, but be warned!

Often freebies can be malicious. Really if you don't know what it is, it's best to not to rez it. 

Another warning, one I have issues with because I am a content creator. When your inventory becomes very full, like over 50,000 items, loading your inventory can take a long time. I highly suggest keeping your inventory well orginized and delete things that have duplicates or you just dont want or need. Keeping a cleaned inventory is very important.
