how many avi's are allowed at one time on a sim?

By default it's 40.   Private landowners can increase this (as can LL with Mainland sims, though they are very unwilling to) to anything up to 100, though in practice I wouldn't go over 70 or 80, because then it gets impossible to move.

I was actually once at a party where we managed to get 100 people on the sim.  No one could move an inch and the sim crashed atter about 5 minutes.
