You ask the merchant.  Gift cards come in many different flavors, all different, and are a private deal between the merchant and her/his customers.  There's often a sign of instructions just inside the door of a shop that offers gift cards, or there is a dialog menu that gives you a chance to use a card when you decide to buy.  If you can't find the instructions, ask.
