I'm trying to install Second Life on a new laptop but it keeps failing.

Check to be sure that the YEAR is correct.  That's the usual problem.  If there's really nothing wrong with the date, then your CMOS battery may be dead.  It's nasty to sell you a new laptop with a dead CMOS battery, but stranger things have happened.  They're cheap, anyway.
