Why has my avatar turned into red smoke after I applied a new shape?

The problem is that your new appearance has not yet rezzed...that is, the information on your shape hasn't been shared with your viewer, the server, or both.  This usually clears up within a few minutes.

If it does not, there are two possibilities.  Either you have a poor internet connection, or the shape itself is corrupt.  There are some things you can do about the former:

• If you are using wireless internet, don't.  Connect to the web with FIOS, DSL, or cable
• If you are using WiFi to connect to your home network, don't.  Use an ethernet cable to connect your computer and router
• Try adding the Google Free Public DNS addresses to your router's setup
• Try turning off your internet modem/router.  Wait a few minutes, then turn it on and let it reboot

To check for the latter, go to a low lag region like Pooley or Heckendorf.  Try putting on a different shape and wait until you rez.  Then wear the new shape again.  If you still do not rez after a few minutes, contact the creator and see if they can provide assistance.

If you can use a different shape and see your avatar render, that pretty much says it is the new shape. Ask the vender of your new shape to send another copy. They will want the transaction number, which you can get from your account pages in the SL Web Site.

There is the possibility as Lindal Kidd suggests that it is a connection problem. You can check that here: Troubleshoot Your #SL Connection --- Remember. A good Internet connection and a good connection to Second Life are not the same things.

Whether or not wireless makes a difference is very dependent on the age of your access point (wireless router). If it has the ‘N’ protocol, it likely is not a problem. But, heavy use by multiple people can still cause problems.

Using a cable connection for a test will reveal if wireless is the problem.
