The UV map is only part of the exercise.  Without a properly made UV map -- that is, a 2D representation of the polygons that make up the 3D model -- there is no way to apply textures to the model once it is uploaded to SL.  However, the UV map does not assign faces.  You have to do that in Blender (or Maya, or whatever your modelling tool is) as you are creating the model itself.  A "face" on your uploaded model is defined as a collection of polygons -- a "material" -- in your model in Blender, independent of the UV map.  You'll find many tutorials on line about how to do that.  Like this one >>>
