GreenDot & PayPal: does it work for purchases

Others may chime in, but I have never had any experience with Green Dot.  In general, the problem with debit cards is that there's no way to do an instant chargeback if Linden Lab has to refund the card for any reason.  If someone in LL's business office suggested it and gave you enough information about how to set it up properly, I'd give it a shot.  If it doesn't work for SL, you can still use the card for other purposes, so there's no loss.

As for what PayPal allows, you'd have to ask them.  Linden Lab's statement on PayPal lays out their concern:

"To use your PayPal account with Linden Lab, it must be verified and be capable of making instant transfers.

Linden Lab does not accept e-check (bank account) payments through PayPal because they cannot be processed quickly enough to match the instant delivery of virtual goods and services.  Therefore, we require that you have a credit card on file with PayPal as a backup payment source, OR that you pay with your PayPal balance in USD. Without a sufficient USD balance in your PayPal account, you will not be able to use it with only a bank account."

That statement has two parts: (1) verified and (2) capable of instant transfers.  It's the second part that is likely to be an issue with debit cards, just as it is with bank accounts.  Notice, however, that there is an out.  As long as you can maintain a cash balance in your PayPal account, Linden Lab doesn't truly care how the money gets there.
