I bought a dress from a shop, but when I click on it to wear, I end up wearing the entire poster.

Most shopowners put all parts of the dress in a box, for ease of sale (like RL Shops too), so you need to unpack it.

 

Go to an area where you can build, or "rezz" Items. Easiest way here is either an area designated for this ( a lot of shops have this), or go to a "sandbox", where everyone can rezz items. (go in search, search a sandbox, tp there).

There, you pull the box with the dress from your inventory, to the ground. Then you Click the box and select "open".

In the appearing menue, press "Copy to inventory". let SL do its work, and you see all parts of the dress in your inventory, wear from there...
