Sounds like you dropped out of "insert" mode in your computer's keyboard settings. Look for an "Insert" key on your keyboard, and press it one time, to revert to the behavior you are used to.
On most operating systems, including both Windows and Macintosh, that key toggles typing behavior between inserting characters at the cursor position, and overtyping what is to the right of the cursor.
