I sent a gift to the wrong person. Is there anyway I could get my item or money back?

If the item is Transferrable, you can nicely ask the person you gave it to to return it.  They are not required to do so though.  And if you were unfortunate enough to send it to someone who never logs in anymore, well, not much anyone can do about that.

Odds are that in a couple of days if the person hasn't returned it, you are simply going to have to chalk it up to experience and buy another one for your friend.  There's no way to force return it.

what has been said already.

and - when gifting, or paying, another resident the name can't be checked enough. best way to ensure it's the correct name would possibly be to copy+paste directly from their profile. (the username, not display name)

but, just curious, did the person you ended up sending it to have a display name similar to your friend's (username)?

Chances are you're going to call it experience, shake it off and buy your friend a new AO. The likelihood of the person you sent it to returning it (provided it is transferable), or the merchant sending a new one or refunding your money, is probably slim to none.

Take bee's advice of copying the name from your friends profile to make sure you send it to the right person. Then double check the name before finishing the purchase.
