REALLY noob question! Can other people mod your stuff in sandboxes?

Recommended Posts

I haven't played in um....3 years? I remember most of how to build....but i'm in a sandbox re-getting the hand of things since i'm a bit rusty....and I want my friend to help me build stuff with me. Can he mod my stuff? Texturize and what not? How do I give him permission? Thank you!!

I have not personally tried this, but I think there is at least two ways to do this:

(1) If you form a group in which both you and your friend join you can deed the objects to the group and set them so that anyone in the group may modify them; and/or

(2) If you are good friends and trust each other, you can set your friends list so that each may edit the others objects.

Hopefully someone will post that has personally tried this and comment. However, it's the slow part of the day. Too early for Europe and too late for the Americas, so it could be a few hours before someone posts.

Randall is about right. You can give each friend permissions to edit your objects. In viewer 2 you have to open the specific profile, then 'Actions/Permissions and then check the action you want to be taken.

For other viewers i think it is  like it was on viewer 1. Open your friends list and there check the checkboxes behind the specific name.

Hi Katara, I've done as Randall stated i.e. created a group and deeded objects to the group so that all group members can edit them.  I think have to be wearing your group title when you create or rezz the object.

Here's a video by Torley that explains this in more detail:  http://vodpod.com/watch/938074-let-friends-groups-edit-your-objects?u=secondlifeshowcase&c=secondlife

Hope this helps.

Edited to add another tutorial on  activating and changing group titles on objects (just in case you need it) http://vodpod.com/watch/3515167-activating-a-group-so-objects-stay-put-second-life-viewer-2-tutorial?u=secondlifeshowcase&c=secondlife

I don't recommend giving edit permissions via profiles, unless you REALLY trust the person, and I recommend immediately revoking them when they are not needed.

deeding objectscan be troublesome with permissions (the group counts as a new owner) so be aware of that, and next owner permissions will apply... returning deeded items send them back to their previous owner with next owner permissions applied. contents can be added ad deleted but not edited (scripts, for example)

I think if you leave the item to "buy" for free with all the permissions turned on, someone else who just finds it there can first own it, then mod it.

Technically, free items are not supposed to be sold in most sandboxes, but it's a rule that I have yet to see enforced.

maybe not in the public ones, but the private ones, especially those that are receiving the non-profit discount can and will often ban you.... because it can cost them.

it's the top thing I ban for (after griefing) in the one I help manage.

(yes I'm nice and usually return stuff if it's apparent it came from the store with dumb permissions, but people that set up scam vendors, stolen crap, and BIB vendors in public areas get no pity from me)

Giving away items in Linden sandboxes, including "buy for L$0" freebies, is fine. What's not allowed is selling up a for-profit store.

And yes, if you set an object to sell as Original, the person who buys it will take ownership of the object inworld, wherever it is — they don't need to rez it from their inventory. If you made the object and want to give them unrestricted abilities to modify, make sure all permissions are checked.

And if you make something in a sandbox and just want others to be able to move it around, check the Anyone: Move checkbox as shown in the screenshot. The Anyone: Copy one is a bit more tricky, since that needs to explicitly be enabled for all objects and their contents or it won't work, and there's no green light confirming when this is done. So in the past, I've had to test on an alt, and in my frustration, usually resorted to For Sale as a freebie instead.

I'll add a note about setting for sale 0$L in privately owned and monitored sandboxes.... don't do it if the contents or the build appears to be a finished product... this is often used by people redistributing stolen content to their friends, and can get you banned form that location and AR'd depending on how closely the person monitoring looks at the item.

if you must, then do it in a non public area (like up in the sky) to avoid any drama or problems dealing with the AR system.

Thanks, Torley, for the clarification.

I've never been busted for selling freebies in a public sandbox, but I've always been uncomfortable about leaving items to be potentially picked up by people I expect to be there later; not because I think LL considers 0L to be a "sale", but because it might show as a sale in the system and potentiate some kind of automatic disciplinary action.

Am I to understand that a sale of 0L does not show as a sale, or that it will simply be ignored?
