Question - How to change Landgroup

No need to return all items.  You can change the group of objects in place.  You will however have to turn auto return off during the transition.  Otherwise you will lose objects as you switch groups.  You can turn it back on once the changes are made.  Having done this a couple times in the past, it is a lot of busy work but it really doesn't take that long if you are organized.

ETA:  Sorry RL got in the way!   To finish my thread here are the steps in order that you need to execute.

1. Decide on new group and create
2. Decide who is going to change the group setting in which objects and make sure they have build privs
3. Add the "conversion crew" to the new group
4. TURN AUTO RETURN OFF  This is important to do here before the sale/transfer
5. Set the land for sale to a specific avatar
6. Remove all the tier contributions from the old group.  If you don't do this, you could end up paying double tier for the month
7. Move those tier contributions to the new group.
8. Have the avatar Buy for Group.  Again this is important.  If the avatar buys the land and then deeds to group that works but the avatar account will have owned the land for a couple minutes and that's enough to trigger a tier payment.
9. Now the fun begins.  Start changing all objects on the land to the new group
10. Use the About Land - Objects tab to monitor your progress.  When you start you will have 0 set to group and lots of prim Owned by others.  You will be done when you have all prims listed as Set to group and 0 listed as Owned by others.
11. Chances are you will miss some objects and try as you may you won't find them.  Return them to their owners
12. Now that you have all items set to the new group, turn auto return back on

 ETA2: regarding your concern.  You can highlight select multiple objects and set to a new group all at once.  So with proper positioning and people that know how to build and select multiple objects at once, this is not as hard as you think. I've been able to drag-select half a sim full of objects and reset in one try! :matte-motes-sunglasses-3:

Actually, it depends on how the in-world prims are owned.

The prims in the sim could be deeded to the land group now, in which case the transfer is simple. When you do the step for setting the land for sale to a specific user, tick the option to "sell objects with land" option, and any transferrable objects that are deeded to the group will become the property of the new parcel owner - the new group, if 'Buy for group' is used.

The prims might also just be 'set' to the land group, but owned by individuals. This is often the case if it is personal property belonging to renters, or for no-transfer items that they want safe from auto-return on group-owned land. Those items need to be set to the new land group individually, and auto-return needs to be off while you make the swap.

I use the 'sell objects with land' option to transfer ownership of whole sims worth of in-place content in one step, including Linden Plants that I set out as landscaping. It is a real godsend.

Note that if you do it as Cinnamon suggested, and change group after the sale, that drag-selecting over an area gets only the items you are close enough to see. Small items that you can't see due to LOD culling can get missed. Drag-selecting also will not select Linden Plants at all. Those you must click or shift-click individually.
