Off the top of my head (pardon the pun) did you also ensure your graphics card drivers are up to date? And look at the graphics settings inworld too.

Hello LisaRenee and welcome to SL Forums. Try to disable VBO, you find it under Menu Me --> Preferences --> Graphics tab --> Hardware --> disable the option "Enable OpenGL Vertex Buffer Objects" and see if that makes any difference. If no, sounds like a problem with graphics card, maybe from overheat.
