Welcome to Second Life Answers, Stephen031

Other sites like IMVU are not as heavy on graphics as Second Life, and I would hazard a guess the reason for your crashes could be down to your graphics card feeling overloaded.

However, it would be extremely helpful to us to know what your computer's specifications are, and we can advise you further. Also, you can check that the drivers for your graphics card are up to date, keep your computer as cool as possible, ie by cleaning out the dust on a regular basis, and if you accessing Second Life via a wireless connection, don't. Use wired whenever possible.
